Enough Abuse Ghana

Ghana is the third West African site of the Enough Abuse Campaign. Child rights advocate Ophelia Opoku Adwoa Akormaa, known as Ophelia, organized the Campaign in 2024. Enough Abuse Ghana educates teachers throughout Accra, the Capitol City, about how schools can be engaged in preventing child sexual abuse and reporting suspected cases.

The Enough Abuse Ghana team includes several teachers, a social worker, a pastor and other community leaders who have been trained and certified to use the Enough Abuse curriculum and other prevention resources to educate teachers and parents.

They now join their other Enough Abuse trainers in Nigeria and Sierra Leone who are leading efforts in their countries to educate parents, professionals and the public about how they can take actions to prevent child sexual abuse.

Enough Abuse Ghana Begins Training and Prevention Activities

Enough Abuse Ghana has conducted their first training in the Ayim community, Eastern Region, Ghana. 

Ophelia has shared that Enough Abuse Ghana trainers have focused on the grooming aspect of child sexual abuse. Even though it is more subtle, they believe it has a larger victim population. In light of this, they have adopted some techniques to curb the prevalence. They have embarked on intensive community outreach activities to educate the public about child sexual abuse and the contributing factors. 

They have also partnered with the Ayim D/A Basic School and have intensively trained two of their teachers. These teachers run the Enough Abuse club which meets biweekly. They are also on the lookout for students who are more likely suffer sexual abuse.

Enough Abuse Ghana donated two sewing machines with some sewing accessories to the Ayim D/A School as part of our efforts to curb child sexual abuse. This donation was made to the Enough Abuse Club.

Lastly, Ophelia has shared that in the Ghanaian community, due to their housing situation, children living in “compound” houses are more likely to be sexually abused. One particular avenue that promotes this menace is when school-going children are sent to elderly/educated neighbors to get assisted with academic activities. About 13% of sexual violence cases happen in the school/education sector. They believe it is higher than this because most cases are not reported. From their local survey, they gathered that about 2 in 5 children have been exposed to sexual materials, including pornography. The Safe-Space Project to create a safe space for school-going children performing their academic activities has been launched as a pilot in Amasaman.
